As Iâm waiting to board the plane, I text my mom and let her know when Iâll be landing and ask if she can pick me up. I pull out the book I picked up at Target and try to get some reading in. Ten minutes later I look up and canât even remember what Iâve read. There is too much on my mind, and even the book canât distract me.
My whole body trembles as mountains come into view. The closer we get to landing, the more jittery I become. I canât avoid this situation forever.
My mom is waving me down as I walk outside the airport. I walk over and she gives me a hug. She grabs my suitcase from me and puts it in her back seat. We havenât said a word to each other yet. Iâm too exhausted to talk. What do I even say? I made a fool out of myself.
She looks over at me. âAre you going to tell me where you have been?â
I sigh. âItâs a long story. I donât have the energy to talk about it.â
âYou look sad and hurt. Nothing bad happened. Did it?â
âNo.â Unless youâre talking about Aiden cheating on me and finding out the guy I met and started falling for was engaged to the whore Aiden slept with. No, Iâm not hurt. I donât even know what to feel right now.
âDo you want to talk about Aiden and what you are going to do?â
âIâm divorcing him, Mom.â I stare out the window, watching cars drive past us. Sheâs driving slower than usual, to get more out of me before we get to my house.
My mom and I have always been so close. Growing up without a father, I guess it is bound to happen. I never knew exactly what happened with her and my father. I never cared. She filled that void for me, and I honestly didnât even notice he was missing. She dated here and there. Nothing serious. It was a blessing that she and my father never worked out. Sheâs so content being alone, dating and having all her free time whenever she wants. At this point in her life, I canât see her letting a man have any say in her life.
âI know you are. I mean, are you staying at the house, or is he?â
âI told him to move out once I got home. Since the day I picked up my stuff from the hotel, I haven't spoken to him. He better have left.â
âHe doesnât know about the other week you spent with this mysterious friend of yours?â
âNo. Youâre the only one that knows. Well, Lia, but I trust her not to say anything.â I lean back into the seat and rest my head, staring out into the open road ahead of us. Looking out into the darkness that has already consumed me.
âAre you ever going to tell me about this friend?â
I sigh and tell her everything from the day Aiden and I landed in Hawaii, Jay and I in Hawaii and the week I spent at his house.
